We had the honor of playing for the Millersport UMC Women’s Retreat at “The Place Off The Square” in Newark this past weekend.  WOW!  We got so much more out of this experience than we expected!!  We thought we’d play a couple of sets and sit back as observers the rest of the time.  We were encouraged to be retreat participants from the very beginning.  The planning committee had put together such a wonderful variety of experiences – from formal prayer and scripture, music, dance, personal testimony, and teaching……all different ways of feeling the presence of the Lord…and He was definitely there in the people that weekend.

Musically, we stretched a bit and added some praise and worship music – with our Evening Rose feel – to our repetoire.  It was great for us to perform this music and we’ll keep it in the mix!

Many thanks to Brenda Thompson, our initial contact, Tara Vinson the pastor’s wife/violin virtuoso who played with us (!!!) and the rest of the retreat committee for an incredible experience!

Just back from our concert at South Shore Ministries in Thornville, OH.  Wow!  They were very warm, gracious, and welcoming hosts.  We arrived early to set up and do a sound check.  They rearranged the stage platforms to suit our needs and worked with arranging and balancing the microphones to let us sound our best.  Despite the snow, they had 85 attendees!  We played a 45 minute Christmas set, featuring songs from “Christmas Rose” and some interactive sing alongs.  They were the best “12 Days of Christmas” singers ever!!  Then there was an intermission featuring Scottish desserts – 3 kinds of pudding (bread pudding, chocolate, and butterscotch) and butter cookies.  Then we did a 45 minute Celtic set.  Throughout the performance, they had a slide show on the wall above us.  As we were finishing “The Fields of Athenry,” Pastor Doug opened the sanctuary doors.  Through the foyer, I could see the Christmas tree lights and the glistening snow.  It was so beautiful!

It is Evening Rose’s practice to donate a portion of our CD sales back to church organizations when we perform for them.  Pastor Doug said that they were very blessed right now and told us to donate it to a charity in Lancaster, so we will be able to make a donation to the Food Pantry on their behalf.

Then a white-knuckle drive home…. but it was worth it!  If you are looking for a place to worship or just need a friendly listener, visit Pastor Doug Lynn as South Shore Ministries!

We participated in the Family Fair Day for the Lancaster Festival last Saturday.  It was a fabulous day, but if we had to sum it up in one word, that would be HOT!

We gave a concert on the stage at 10:45.  We played some of our standards like “Fields of Athenry” and “Come By The Hills.”  There was audience participation with “The Wild Rover” and “Rattlin’ Bog,” and we included some of the not-so-blantantly Christmas selections, “What Noise on Earth” and “Christmas Day Ida Moarnin’” to promote the new CD.  We ened with a three-part a capella version of “The Parting Glass.”  It is quickly becoming our favorite piece to sing.

Later in the day we gave hands-on instrument demonstrations on dulcimer and bodhran.  Many thanks to our good friend John for leading the bodhran classes!  We had eager participants of all ages.  It really is cool to see so many people interested in folk music.  We had a great time.  Thanks to everyone who stopped by.

Go to “photo galleries” to see many pictures from the day.

We were invited to provide music during the Art Walk at the First Presbyterian Church.  It was a wonderful evening!  Those of you who’ve done the Art Walk know that it’s usually really HOT!  We were very lucky – we got to play in the lovely air-conditioned church!  There was a room a wonderful display of art representing various mediums.  The folks from  the church donate cookies for a delicious spread to share with the community.  We played directly across from the cookie table – very tempting all night long!!

It was a great place to play.  There was a steady crowd of people throughout the evening.  The people from the church were very gracious hosts, to us as well as to the many Art Walk visitors.  We were asked back for next year!
